Getting free Connects on Upwork and applying without Connects are two separate questions. One is a Connects balance Upwork adds without a charge. The other is a proposal that never spends Connects, such as a reply to a client invite. What Upwork is and how it works covers the profile, the proposal, and the contract. Connects are only the token an open-job proposal uses.
This applies to a freelancer on the Basic plan who wants the routes that cost nothing. It does not apply to Freelancer Plus. Plus is a paid plan at $19.99 a month, and Upwork includes 100 Connects with that subscription (Upwork Help). Extra Connects are also a purchase: Upwork lists them at $0.15 each (Upwork Help, checked 1 Nov 2026).
The 10 free Connects a month are not guaranteed
Upwork's free-Connects guide says freelancers may get 10 free Connects a month on the Basic plan. The same page says that monthly amount depends on the offers available when the account was created. "May" is the current word. A new account is not promised 10 free Connects a month.
In 2025, freelancers reported that some accounts stopped receiving the monthly 10, and that some new profiles finished setup with no Connects added. Other accounts in those same discussions still received the 10. Those posts are individual reports, not a published count of how many accounts are left out.
Upwork's Connects help page says customer support has the same view of eligibility as the freelancer and cannot add monthly Connects by hand. If Connects history has no monthly line, a support chat does not create the offer.
How to apply on Upwork without Connects, and where free Connects come from
The routes below do not start with a Connects purchase. Client invites and an Upwork Talent Accelerator project are ways to apply for jobs on Upwork without Connects. Talent badges, partner certifications, interviews, and onboarding tasks add free Connects to the balance. Each route has a limit, and none of them appears on every account.
Answer client invites
A client invite is a request to submit a proposal for that client's job. Upwork says responding to an invite, by accepting or declining it, does not cost Connects. Accepting an offer does not use Connects either. An open job in search still charges the number shown on the post.
Client invites come from the profile, not from a proposal sent first. A complete profile, with a title and samples a client can open, is what makes an invite possible. How to create an Upwork profile that gets noticed is the layout for that page. The reply still has to match the job. How to write an Upwork proposal that wins jobs is the same structure, and no Connects are deducted when the message answers an invite.
Take an Upwork Talent Accelerator project if invited
Upwork Talent Accelerator is a pilot for people who are new to Upwork and already experienced in their field. Upwork invites a limited group shortly after they join. The help page points to skills, demand for that skill, and signs the person can finish a job. Not every new account sees the program. Freelancers who already have Upwork work history are not eligible.
The invite is a private, fixed-price project that Upwork manages. No Connects are required to open that project. Connects are still required for other jobs. Upwork evaluates the submitted work. The project pays a fixed amount, and a rating can be added to the profile.
Extra rewards depend on that rating. Upwork's Talent Accelerator help page (checked 1 Nov 2026) lists them as follows:
Five stars: six months of Freelancer Plus and 500 Connects.
Four stars: three months of Freelancer Plus and 200 Connects.
Three stars or below: no extra benefits.
The Plus time and the Connects are a reward for the rating. They are not a fee to enter. A three-star result can still include the project payment and includes no Connects bonus. The program does not promise later clients.
Earn talent badges and partner certifications
Upwork pays 30 Connects for specific talent badges. The talent badges that pay are Rising Talent, Top Rated, and Top Rated Plus. Each one pays 30 Connects once. The Expert-Vetted badge does not include a Connects bonus.
Rising Talent is the badge aimed at a newer freelancer. Upwork's help page says it arrives as an invitation from Upwork or, without an invitation, from an average rating of 4.8 or higher plus at least $250 earned in the past 12 months. The account also needs a complete profile, a proposal or a contract in the past 90 days, identity verification, a withdrawal method, no account holds, and no negative feedback. If a Job Success Score exists, it must be 90% or higher. A profile with no earnings and no invitation does not receive this badge.
Top Rated and Top Rated Plus come later. Upwork describes Top Rated as the top 10% of freelancers and Top Rated Plus as the top 3%, and Plus requires the Top Rated badge first. They are not a source of Connects on the first day.
Partner Certified is a separate badge. Claiming a certification from a new partner pays 150 Connects once. A second partner pays another 150. A second certificate from the same partner does not pay again. Upwork says these partner exams are often free or discounted. A paid exam is not a route that costs nothing. The Connects arrive when a partner certification is claimed from the Certifications section of the profile. A certificate you add yourself from a non-partner does not pay them.
Take interviews with established clients
Upwork may add Connects after interviews with established clients. The help page says this does not happen for every interview. The number varies, and it may not match the Connects spent to send the proposal. Upwork does not publish the exact test for an established client. It says these are generally clients who have hired and spent money on Upwork.
When a reward is paid, part can show as a refund of the Connects used to apply, and the rest as awarded Connects. Upwork's example is a proposal that spent 8 Connects and an interview reward of 10: the history shows 8 refunded and 2 awarded. A declined proposal does not trigger the reward. When an Upwork job is worth the Connects is the check before any spend, because an interview reward is not a promise that the Connects come back.
Finish onboarding tasks
Upwork says a new freelancer may earn Connects from onboarding tasks: profile setup, identity verification, and how-to videos. The help page does not publish one fixed total, and the tasks are not listed on every account. A task that is listed is a zero-cost route. A task that is absent cannot be completed for a reward.
A one-time bonus of 50 Connects sits next to these tasks and is not one of them. Upwork says new users may receive that 50 after they buy Connects or subscribe to Freelancer Plus, and only when the offer is shown at signup. The bonus follows a payment. Opening an account does not by itself add those 50.
Rewards that need spending first, or that you cannot plan on
Some Connects rewards are real but either need Connects or money spent first, or arrive only when Upwork chooses:
The first successful proposal boost pays 10 Connects back, once. The boost itself is charged.
A test reward pays 12 Connects after three or more proposals that together spend at least 54 Connects, up to twice in a calendar month. Upwork says this reward is being tested and may not pay every freelancer who hits those numbers.
A promo code, when Upwork sends one, adds Connects at no charge. Codes are occasional, and they expire. A code that never arrives is not a plan.
Connects that are rewarded or bought roll over with no limit on how many you can hold, and Upwork's free-Connects guide says unused Connects expire one year after they were purchased, awarded, or earned.
Read the history before buying a bundle
Open Connects history first. A missing monthly line means that offer is not on the account. Finish an onboarding task if one is still listed, and answer a client invite if one is waiting. If the account is brand new, what to do before the first proposals and the step-by-step beginner guide cover the setup that makes invites possible. An open job shows how many Connects the proposal requires. The Upwork Connects calculator turns that number, at the $0.15 price, into a cost per reply, interview, and contract. That cost is the reason to buy. A bundle with no job behind it is only a balance.
