What Is the Difference Between Upwork and Fiverr?

The difference between Upwork and Fiverr is who makes the first move. On Upwork, a client posts a job and freelancers send proposals. On Fiverr, a freelancer lists a fixed service, called a Gig, and a buyer orders it. Fees, payout timing, and the kind of work that fits each platform follow from that one difference.

This comparison covers only those two marketplaces. What is Upwork and how it works and what is Fiverr and how it works explain each one in detail. Freelancer.com is a third option, and which freelance platform is best for you compares all three.

Fees and rules below were checked on Upwork's and Fiverr's help pages on 1 November 2026. Both platforms change them from time to time.

Key differences between Fiverr and Upwork

Upwork vs Fiverr comes down to six points:

  • How work starts. Upwork: a client posts a job, freelancers apply, and the client picks one, often after an interview. Fiverr: the buyer picks a Gig package and pays. A buyer can also ask a seller for a custom offer.

  • What a freelancer pays to find work. On Upwork, most proposals cost Connects, which are bought tokens. A proposal answering a client's invite costs none. Fiverr has no bidding cost, but some new sellers pay a one-time ID-verification fee.

  • The seller's fee. The Fiverr seller fee is 20% of each order. The Upwork freelancer service fee is 0% to 15%, set per contract and shown before the freelancer accepts.

  • The buyer's fee. Both add a fee at checkout. The amounts differ and are covered in the buyer section.

  • Contract shape. Upwork handles hourly contracts, fixed-price milestones, and long retainers. Fiverr is built around set packages with a delivery date, plus custom offers and milestones on larger orders.

  • Age. Upwork requires 18, or the age of majority where that is higher, with no parent-account option. Fiverr requires 18, and allows ages 13 to 17 only through an account a parent or guardian owns.

Fiverr vs Upwork: for buyers

A buyer on Fiverr starts by searching. Gig pages show packages, prices, delivery times, and reviews before any message is sent. That suits a defined task: a logo, an edited video, a fixed set of blog posts, a landing page with a known scope. The buyer pays at checkout, and Fiverr holds the money until the order is complete.

A buyer on Upwork starts by writing a job post. Proposals arrive, and the buyer compares profiles, samples, and rates, then interviews. That takes longer, and it suits work where the scope needs discussion first: a custom web app, ongoing support, a role measured in hours per week. On a fixed-price contract, the client funds each milestone upfront and releases it after reviewing the submitted work. On an hourly contract, the client can review logged hours each week.

Both platforms charge the buyer a fee on top of the freelancer's price:

  • Fiverr: a service fee of 5.5% of the purchase, plus a small-order fee. Fiverr's billing help lists $3.50 on orders under $200. Its client guide lists $3 on orders under $100. Those two pages do not match. The checkout screen shows the amount that applies.

  • Upwork: a marketplace fee of about 5% to 10%, depending on the client's plan. Upwork's client pricing page lists 5% on the Basic plan and 10% on Business Plus. A one-time contract initiation fee of $0.99 to $14.99 applies to each new contract.

On a $100 job, that means a Fiverr buyer pays roughly $105.50 to $109 and an Upwork Basic buyer roughly $105 plus the initiation fee. How much Upwork costs freelancers and clients breaks down the Upwork side in full.

For a buyer, the practical choice is this. A task that can be described in one sentence and bought as a package fits Fiverr. Work that needs a conversation, a trial week, or hourly billing fits Upwork.

Fiverr vs Upwork: for sellers

For a seller, Fiverr vs Upwork is a choice between selling a listing and selling a pitch.

On Fiverr, the work goes into the Gig: a clear title, three packages, samples, and a description of what is and is not included. Buyers find the Gig through search, so there is no per-application cost. The downside is search itself. A new Gig competes with established ones in the same results, and a weak listing gets no orders no matter how good the work is.

On Upwork, the work goes into each proposal. A freelancer reads the job, writes a short answer to it, and spends Connects to send it. Extra Connects cost $0.15 each on Upwork's help page, and each job shows how many it needs. The 10 free Connects a month that some accounts receive are not guaranteed: Upwork says Basic accounts "may" get them. How to get free Connects on Upwork lists the routes that cost nothing, and the Upwork Connects calculator shows what proposals cost per contract won.

Take one $100 job on each platform:

  • Fiverr: the 20% seller fee is $20, so the seller's earnings are $80. They become available 14 days after the order is completed, or 7 days for Seller Plus, Top Rated, and Pro sellers. The buyer has three days after delivery to respond before the order completes on its own.

  • Upwork: at a 10% fee the freelancer keeps $90. At 0% it is $100, and at 15% it is $85. The fee is shown on the offer or proposal. On a fixed-price contract, the client has up to 14 days to review submitted work, and approved funds then sit in a 5-day security hold. Hourly earnings are usually available about 10 days after the billing week ends. The Upwork fee calculator works out the take-home for any price and fee.

The arithmetic does not settle the choice by itself. An Upwork contract at a 10% fee can still cost more than a Fiverr order if it took many Connects to win. A Fiverr order at 20% can be cheaper to win if the Gig brings orders without any bidding.

Payouts work similarly once the money is available. Both platforms pay out through Payoneer, and Fiverr also supports PayPal. Upwork also has direct-to-bank options, with a local bank withdrawal listed at $0.99. In Pakistan, Payoneer works on both platforms and PayPal does not. The best freelancing platform for beginners in Pakistan covers the local setup.

Which Should You Choose?

Upwork or Fiverr depends on how the work is sold, not on which platform is bigger.

Choose Fiverr when:

  • the service fits a package with a fixed price, deliverable, and delivery date,

  • inbound orders are preferred over writing proposals,

  • the seller is 13 to 17 and a parent or guardian can own the account.

Choose Upwork when:

  • the work is custom, hourly, or ongoing,

  • the freelancer can write a short proposal tied to each job,

  • a budget for Connects is acceptable while the first contracts come in,

  • the freelancer is 18 or older.

A buyer can use the same test. A defined, packaged task fits Fiverr. Work that needs a scoping conversation fits Upwork.

For a seller who cannot decide, the useful step is to start on one platform, not both. Reviews and ranking build per platform, and two half-finished profiles collect neither. Pick the one that matches the offer, run it for a set period, and add the second only after the first produces paid work. On Upwork, that starts with an Upwork profile that gets noticed. On Fiverr, it starts with one clear Gig.

Frequently asked questions

Can the same person sell on both Upwork and Fiverr?

Yes. Each platform needs its own account, profile, and verification, and reviews do not move from one to the other. Fiverr allows each payout method on only one Fiverr account.

Is Fiverr cheaper than Upwork for a seller?

Not always. Fiverr keeps 20% of each order. Upwork's fee is 0% to 15% per contract, so it can be lower, but Upwork proposals also cost Connects. The fee shown on the contract or order is the one that applies.

Which platform pays a seller faster?

It depends on the contract. Fiverr releases earnings 14 days after the order completes, or 7 days on some programs. An Upwork fixed-price payment waits for the client's approval, up to 14 days, and then a 5-day security hold.

Can a 16-year-old sell on Upwork or Fiverr?

Not on Upwork, which requires 18 or the local age of majority. Fiverr allows ages 13 to 17 only through an account a parent or guardian owns, with withdrawals going to that account.

Does a buyer pay more on Upwork or on Fiverr?

Both add a fee on top of the freelancer's price. Fiverr lists 5.5% plus a small-order fee. Upwork lists a 5% to 10% marketplace fee by plan and a one-time contract initiation fee of $0.99 to $14.99.
